ISPP Hour of Code: After the Hour

Image
We experienced outstanding participation in the Hour of Code and have high hopes that some of our learners will continue learning to program... for fun! Here is a list of resources for learning to code . Tuesday 9 December: Hour of Code on the Elementary Campus We had parents, students, and teachers involved in the hour of code at the Media Center. It was inspiring to see our learners struggle and succeed as they worked through tutorials. A few of our ISPP ESTA (Elementary Student Technology Advisory) students were able to volunteer as supporters to help people when they got stuck. Afterwards they were absolutely glowing from the experience, and they said it was challenging to help people, and they loved it! Thank you to all who joined us! Thursday 11 December: Hour of Code on the Secondary Campus ISPP students, teachers, and 25 students from the Liger Learning Center participated in the hour of code in the Art room. A few of our more experienced coding students were able ...

Create tag clouds with your Google Docs!

Image
It's so easy! Open a Google Doc, Go to 'Add-ons' and Get add-ons: Search Tag Cloud Generator, Add it: Got to Add-ons and Tag Cloud Generator -->Create Tag Cloud: You get a tag cloud to the right like this: What did I learn from that? I used too many words like December and week, and not enough words like inspire, create, challenge, collaborate! What can you learn from tag-clouding your docs? Thank you  +Sean Thompson  and Richard Byrne !

Hour of Code and Computer Science Education Week are here!

Here are some ideas to get you started with your Hour of Code!  Don't have an event you can go to? That's okay! You can go to code.org/learn and select a tutorial that looks interesting. Think of the tutorials like books in a library: look at the cover, if it looks good to you, click on it, if it's not what you were looking for, try something else! There's something for everyone. Make sure you have headphones or speakers so you can listen to the videos!   Use programming blocks so you can drag and drop blocks instead of typing code.   Type code and see the results immediately! Learn to color and draw in a brand new way :) Here's the Khan Academy tutorial. Tired of using computers? Try the 'unplugged' group activities that help develop logic, problem solving, and collaboration! Did you make something fun? Share your achievements in the comments! We'd love to see what you create.

Hour of Code at ISPP Campuses

ISPP will host two Hour of Code sessions to celebrate Computer Science Education Week and inspire our community to start coding. It's easy to get started and there are many online resources to keep us going. The sessions are open to all ISPP parents, students, and staff. We will have support teams to help participants, and collaboration (group work) is encouraged! Did you know? www.code.org Hour of Code was started in 2013 to raise awareness about learning to code and promote Computer Science learning in schools. There are fun lessons available for all ages (4-104) so that anyone can learn. Our Elementary Student Technology Advisory had some fun testing out the Flappy Bird Tutorial last week, and enjoyed making their games challenging. Here are a few samples, click the pictures to try the games, why not see what you can make? You will find the lesson here .
