Google+ Circles

Image
Circles are not the same as friends and followers on other social media sites. With other social media there is an approval process. With Circles there is not. It is similar (but different) to Instagram, where you can accept followers without following them, and follow people without allowing them to follow you. It is unlike Facebook, where Friendship is mutual. Here's a haiku about Google+ Circles  Circles: they let you  control whose posts you see, and  who sees what you post. You can edit your Circle privacy here . You can control which circles are public and which circles are private . Follow the link above, or click on Profile, About, and Edit in the People box.  , ,  You can hide everyone in your circles by deselecting the tick box next to Show people in...  You can share some circles , just tick the Show people in... box and click on the down arrow next to it and  deselect circles you would like to hide . Google can help you find times when you and the people you would like to meet with are available (provided, of course, that you and your colleagues enter your schedules in your calendar*). Add a title for the meeting in the 'what' box and click edit event.  Enter the name(s) of the colleagues you would like to meet with in the 'Guests' box. Suggestions will load based on your contacts. Select and click 'Add'. Minecraft Comes to ISPP Secondary

We are introducing Minecraft Club in ISPP Secondary as a tool for developing collaboration, creativity, problem solving, and  making a difference . We hope to bring Minecraft to the Elementary in the near future. In most schools, you will find a history of debate about whether students should or should not be allowed to play games (computer games, that is).  Conversations will include passionate perspectives on the dangers (violence, addiction, inactivity) and benefits (collaboration, creativity, problem solving) of gaming. Our Minecraft Club will focus on both the dangers and the benefits to help our students develop healthy habits and discover the potential of this learning tool. On  violence  collaboration This is a topic that falls close to our hearts because we want a peaceful world for our children, and we worry that if our children play games that include violence, they will exhibit violent behaviors. While Minecraft does allow survival game modes in whic...

Control notifications: Google Docs, Google Plus Communities, Circles, and More

I've been getting great questions from fabulous teachers about how to control notifications. A few classes using comments as a feedback tool in docs could quickly turn your inbox into a mess. Our use of Google+ is loading some inboxes with notifications about posts and being added to circles. You can control this! In Google Docs: Click on Comments in the document, then click on notifications, then choose your preference. In Google Plus Communities: Go to Google Plus Go to Communities by hovering over Home (top left) and scrolling down to Communities   Click on the community and then click on Notifications at the top left to toggle (switch back and forth) between having notifications on and off. In Google Plus Settings Go to Google Plus Hover over Home in the top left and scroll down to Settings     You can change your notification delivery for phone and email. Scroll to receive notifications to control which notifications you receive....
