Collaborative Bingo: a mixed media lesson idea
This activity is designed to help students collaboratively brainstorm and think about ideas. In this example they brainstormed steps they would need to follow to go out and take photographs that communicate a perspective on Phnom Penh. It can be adapted for different learning objectives. This activity gives students thinking time and processing time, and allows them to collaboratively exchange ideas and learn from one another. It is also fun.
Learning Objective: determine and reflect on the planning steps for doing a photography shoot
ATL: Social -Collaboration; Self-Management -Organization
Media / tools: Google Docs, pencil and paper
Time: 60 minutes
Other possible learning objectives (second ATL would change): words related to a topic, main plot events in a novel, character traits, parts of a cell, periodic table of the elements (have them describe properties in the Google doc and write the elements on the bingo chart), multiplication (have them write multiplications in the Google Doc and numbers on the chart), vocabulary in a language unit (write a definition or clue on the G-Doc and the word on the chart).
Procedure
Create the games (30 minutes) Put students in groups of four. Two students create and work on a shared Google Doc for their group in their class folder on Drive. Two students create a 16 celled bingo sheet. All students brainstorm ideas for the list. They can choose any number of items to add to the chart twice. This facilitates thinking about which steps are most likely to be called.
Teacher role: circulate to check for gaps and misunderstandings.
As groups finish, they can continue to work on any tasks associated with the relevant learning. The ideas exchanged in the groups helped to expand their thinking.
Play the game (20 minutes): Play Bingo! Have a Bingo center with a table for each group. Groups crowd around their chart to help with placing game pieces (scraps of paper work).
Teacher role: open the document from each of the four groups, and read one item from each document in rotation. As you are playing Bingo, you will be reviewing the relevant vocabulary / skills / or ideas associated with the learning objective.
Here are Bingo sheets Design students made. We decided that the first one should win the prize for best sheet. There were also prizes for first Bingo and most relevantly detailed list of planning steps. Then we made a prize for most organized list of planning steps. Because everyone was a winner.
