Setting up Apple ID

Setting up your Apple ID will allow you to get access to free and paid apps and media in Garage Band, the App Store, and iTunes. Sometimes there will be items that you need for school. It can be useful to share one Apple ID within your family so that everyone has access to the apps and media that are added to the ID. Before you begin, please note that you need to be 13 before you can set up an Apple ID with your own email. Do not lie about your age with your school email. If you are under 13, you can ask your parents to create an Apple ID and authorize your computer to use it. They can create one without a credit card so you don't make any purchases, and you can use gift cards when you want to make a purchase. Parents can set parental controls, see here . Instructions for setting up an Apple ID without a credit card can be found here . Helpful information about iTunes accounts for students can be found here . iOS 8 is due to come out with an Apple ID Family Plan, here i...

Hide your blogs from search engines, and not your readers!

Tired of inviting people to be readers of your blog? You can make your blog public, but hide it from search engines. That way your teachers and other readers can easily check out your blog! No more sending, re-sending, and accepting invitations. Your school blogs will be visible in search engines if you do not complete steps 1-4. Check it. Google your name. Know and control your searchable digital footprint! Log into Blogger and find your blog.  Click the down arrow next to the paper icon and go to settings.  Click on Edit next to Privacy and change both settings to NO.  Save Changes. Scroll down to Blog Readers and click Edit  Select Public  Click on Save Changes and now all your teachers and anyone you share your link with can read your blog!

Photo Booth: Recording and exporting video

Image
You can use Photo Booth to record video on your Mac. Open Photo Booth:  Select the film strip button from the three options (do you know what the other two do?)  You can add effects using the effects button. Avoid distracting and unnecessary effects.   Click the red video camera button to record your video. You will get 3 seconds before recording starts. Avoid doing too many takes. If you make a mistake, just keep going. Seriously. Otherwise you will be doing this for hours .  Click the square stop button to stop recording.  You can watch your time (longer videos make larger files)  You can play your video by double clicking on it. You can delete your video by clicking on it and then clicking the 'X'. You can export your video by right clicking (or clicking with two fingers) and selecting Export Video. Give your movie a logical title (guitar practice 13 Aug 2014). Click on the down arrow next to the title to choose where you will sa...

Setting up multiple users in Chrome

Image
Google offers the feature of reading your mail, recording your searches, and tracking your history so that Google can make suggestions for you based on your interests as seen in your online actions. This is great sometimes, but sometimes it means that Google makes suggestions that are off-topic or out of context for what you are trying to do. You can also store all your bookmarks in Chrome, but some bookmarks are great for school (school Gmail, ManageBac and Drive), while others are not so much (Facebook, Games, and Tumblr). There are also many settings you can adjust to customize your Chrome experience to suit your taste and your circumstances, but your taste at home may be different from your taste at school. There's a solution! You can set up users in Chrome. They open in separate browser windows and you can keep your accounts separate. Different histories, different bookmarks. Click on People from the top menu bar                 ...

Embedding media in your blog or Site

Image
There are many options for sharing media in your blog by getting the embed code and editing your post using HTML. I do not recommend using the built in Blogger video upload function at this date in history because I find it crashes and the display is small, but you can try if you like! With the new Google Sites, you can use the menu on the right to select the file you would like to embed, you do not need to get the embed code. Get the embed code (YouTube, Google Presentations / Docs, Movies uploaded to Drive) On YouTube, click on share, embed, and then command C (on PC control C) to copy the code  On Google Presentations / Docs, go to File, Publish to the web, set privacy (only ISPP or the world), and click command c to copy embed code.  On videos and images uploaded to Google Drive, open the file, click on the three dots for more actions, choose Open in new window.  Click on the three dots again and choose 'embed item'. This option will only appear...
